Sanitary Sewer

The collection and treatment of domestic sewage and wastewater is vital to public health and clean water. It is among the most important factors responsible for the general level of good health enjoyed in the United States. Sewers collect sewage and wastewater from homes, businesses, and industries and deliver it to wastewater treatment facilities before it is discharged to water bodies or land or reused.

Private Sewer Lateral Replacement Program

While the city of Pipestone is responsible for maintaining its sewer main located in public right of ways, property owners are responsible for all expenses resulting from maintenance and repair of their property's entire lateral from inside the property's basement to the city's sewer main in the street. Property owners are also responsible for expenses incurred in determining or relieving the cause of any blockage in the entire sewer lateral from the building foundation to the connection of the city's sewer main.

Maintenance of the sewer lateral includes cleaning out debris, removing grease, cutting roots, and any other procedures used to keep the entire length of the sewer lateral clear and functional.

Repair of the sewer lateral includes removing blockages, lining compromised pipes, replacing collapsed pipes, or fixing any leaks.

If your sewer lateral pipe is made of clay, collapsed, or leaking, the property owner may be eligible to participate in the Sewer Lateral Financial Assistance Program.
