This building was constructed in 1904 and was the site of the Pipestone Public Library until 1975. With funds provided by the Carnegie Foundation, the building was designed by Joseph Schwartz of Sioux Falls, S. D. and was built of hand-hewn Sioux quartzite by local stonemason George S. Redmon. The use of different colors of quartzite accents such features as the stepped parapets on the gable ends and the arch over the entrance. In 1980 the Carnegie Library building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
